Brian Kelly appointed Notre Dame's new football coach

Brian Kelly will be introduced Friday as the next Notre Dame football coach.
He instantly will be anointed a savior, though he will do well just to be Brian Kelly, with the peak-volume personality and production that suggests, reports Chicago Tribune.
He is a championship program craftsman. He has the magnetic, kinetic charisma befitting the son of an Irish Catholic politician from Boston. He led Cincinnati to two straight Bowl Championship Series bids. It is the hire Notre Dame evidently had to make, the energy and optimism transfusion a listing powerhouse had to have.
"I am very pleased that a thorough and extensive search has led us to a new head coach in Brian Kelly, who I am confident will help us accomplish our goal of competing for national championships," Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement announcing the hire.

Judge Halts Jon Gosselin's Media Appearances

Jon Gosselin's media tour comes to an end as a judge in Maryland on Thursday ruled in favor of TLC, granting a preliminary injunction ordering the reality TV dad to stop making appearances, according to the Associated Press.
The cable network argued that Gosselin's paid and unpaid media appearances – including hosting a party in Las Vegas – violated his contract with the network. A trial in the case has been set for April 19.
TLC issued a statement saying they were "pleased" with the ruling.
"The Court has validated our view that Mr. Gosselin has a valid, binding contract and that he has breached it repeatedly. Step one – getting the court to order Mr. Gosselin to comply with his contractual obligations – has been accomplished," TLC said. "Any further breaches going forward will be violations of a court order. We look forward to the next phase of the litigation, which is to pursue our claim for damages resulting from Mr. Gosselin's numerous breaches."
The star of Jon and Kate Plus 8 was a no-show at the hearing, but his attorney Mark Heller has vehemently denied the reality dad has done anything wrong, calling TLC's suit as "baseless action."
TLC's Chief Operating Officer Edward Sabin testified Thursday that Gosselin's behavior was "embarrassing," TMZ reported. Noting Gosselin's appearance at a Las Vegas pool party, Sabin said, "Jon surrounded by scores of bikini-clad women is inconsistent with the image of our show." Gosselin's attorneys did not present any evidence at the hearing. Source:Ppeople magazine web sit.

Avatar" wows early movie reviewers

Director James Cameron's long-awaited "Avatar" wowed critics at its London premiere on Thursday, with some early reviewers calling it "jaw-dropping," "mind-blowing" and a game-changer in Hollywood for its digital effects.
The 3D epic adventure by the director of 1997 blockbuster "Titanic" is one of the most expensive films ever at a cost of about $400 million to make and market. It begins its worldwide launch next week, hitting U.S. theaters on December 18, reports Reuters news agency.
If initial reviews and Twitter buzz are any indication, it may be money well spent for film studio 20th Century Fox.
"James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world," raved showbiz newspaper The Hollywood Reporter.
"As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is 'Avatar,'" it said.
Britain's biggest-selling tabloid, The Sun, called it "the most dazzling film of the decade. ... The final battle scene is 20 minutes long and absolutely mind-blowing."
"Avatar" shows the forest-dwelling Na'vi fighting for survival against a colonial mining operation bent on stripping their planet. A crippled ex-Marine is chosen to make contact with the mysterious people as a remotely controlled avatar.
Empire magazine gave the movie five stars out of five, calling it a "hugely rewarding experience" whose new technology "will give directors ... one heck of a sandbox to play in."
Twitter lit up with comments from journalists leaving the tightly guarded premiere. "James Cameron is a freakin' genius! I can't say much but wow, I loved it," wrote Alex Billington of the movie website FirstShowing.net.
The London Guardian's Mark Brown wrote on Thursday that "Avatar" was "really much, much better than expected, (it) looked amazing and the story was gripping -- if cheesy in many places."
"The terrible film that some had been anticipating had not materialized. It was good," Brown wrote.

Alcohol likely to raise chances of breast cancer return

Post-menopausal women who have three to four alcoholic beverages a week of any sort have a significantly higher risk that their breast cancer will come back, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.
They said women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer should consider limiting alcohol consumption to less than three drinks a week, especially if they are overweight or obese, reports Reuters.
"We didn't find any increased risk in women who consumed less than half a drink per day. There was no association at all with breast cancer recurrence," said Marilyn Kwan, a research scientist at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, California, who presented her findings at the American Association for Cancer Research San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium.
Other studies have shown that alcohol use can increase the chances a woman will develop breast cancer in the first place, but few studies have looked at the role of alcohol consumption in women who already have had a breast cancer diagnosis.
Kwan and colleagues studied 1,900 women in the Kaiser Permanente Northern California Cancer Registry who survived early-stage invasive breast cancer between 1997 and 2000. The women reported their own level of alcohol consumption.
The women were followed for eight years. Women who drank three to four alcoholic beverages experienced a 30 percent increase in the risk that their breast cancer would come back.
Half of these women drank alcohol -- wine, beer and liquor -- to some degree. The study compared these with breast cancer survivors who did not drink.
The more alcohol they drank, the higher their risk was for cancer recurrence, Kwan said.
She said other studies have shown alcohol can affect levels of estrogen circulating in the body and can increase the rate at which the body processes estrogen. Since many breast cancers are fed by estrogen, and she said she thinks moderate to heavy alcohol consumption may be fueling the cancers.
Kwan said for post-menopausal women who have had breast cancer, reducing alcohol consumption may be a smart move.
More than 400,000 women die from breast cancer worldwide each year.

Spanish PM honours Davis Cup winners

Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on Monday honoured his country's tennis team after they defended their Davis Cup title over the weekend, saying they had made Spanish tennis "the best in the world".
"It was a spectacular series, you managed to make Spanish tennis, without a doubt, the best tennis in the world. You proved it again with this Davis Cup," he told the players at a reception at his official residence in Madrid, reports AFP news agency.
"You played just like the Roja. What one notices above all is the tremendous teamwork you display," he added, using the nickname for the Spain's national football team which won the Euro 2008 championship.
Defending champions Spain had sealed their fourth Davis Cup title on Saturday when the doubles pair of Fernando Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez demolished their Czech opponents to give the hosts an unassailable 3-0 lead.

Rondo helps Celtics win ninth straight

Rajon Rondo's driving dunk with a minute remaining broke a tie and led the Eastern Conference-leading Boston Celtics to their ninth straight victory, 104-102 over the Washington Wizards on Thursday night, reports AP.

Gilbert Arenas led Washington with 25 points, but missed a pair of free throws with 26.7 seconds to play. Arenas missed five of his six free throws.

Browns sack Steelers 13-6

The defending NFL champions lost their fifth straight and had their playoff hopes sacked by the lowly Cleveland Browns, who ended a 12-game losing streak against their bitter rival by beating the Steelers 13-6 on Thursday night in subzero wind chills, reports AP.
Ben Roethlisberger was sacked eight times and lost for the first time in 11 career games against the Browns (2-11), who extended Pittsburgh's longest losing streak in six years and defeated the Steelers (6-7) at home for the first time since 2000.
